The article discusses the challenges Disney faces in producing new Star Wars films following the end of the recent trilogy. Key developments include the departure of screenwriter Steven Knight from the upcoming movie “Star Wars New Jedi Order,” which focuses on Rey Skywalker. This setback could delay production until early 2025. Meanwhile, Disney has other projects in the works, such as a film centered on The Mandalorian, slated for May 2026, with additional films planned for late 2026 and 2027.

If you’re a devotee of the Star Wars franchise and have been open to Disney’s interpretation since acquiring the rights from George Lucas, you may find yourself eagerly anticipating updates on forthcoming films from this iconic universe. Following the conclusion of the recent trilogy and the lackluster performance of the Solo film, Disney appears to be struggling to navigate its cinematic offerings set in a galaxy far, far away. Despite this, the company has launched an impressive array of series, achieving mixed levels of success (including hits like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Andor, The Acolyte, and Obi-Wan Kenobi). However, time is ticking for those yearning for a return to theaters. Unfortunately, there is troubling news: an essential figure in the production of a much-anticipated film is no longer attached to the project…

The Upcoming Star Wars Film Featuring Rey Loses Its Screenwriter

While not all original fans are satisfied (a feat that’s nearly impossible), the new Star Wars films have undeniably found commercial success. Episode VII stands as the highest-grossing installment of the series, raking in over $2 billion worldwide. Even Episode IX, which left many fans feeling frustrated due to questionable narrative decisions, still ranks third in box office performance, just behind Episode VIII and ahead of Episode I. Given this context, it’s no wonder Disney has decided to develop a new movie focused on one of the key figures from this recent saga: Rey Skywalker.

However, since the project’s announcement, details have been scarce for fans to chew on. Tentatively titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order (though this title may change), the film is expected to explore Rey’s journey as she establishes a new Jedi Academy after the events of Episode IX. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy—who is making her film debut but already boasts two Best Documentary Oscars and has helmed episodes of Ms. Marvel—the screenplay was initially crafted by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson before being handed over to Steven Knight, best known for his work on Peaky Blinders. Unfortunately, just a few days ago, Knight announced his exit from the project, leaving production without a screenwriter.

What’s Next for the Star Wars Franchise?

If you’ve been looking forward to seeing Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey and watching her embark on the mission to create the new Jedi Academy, it might be time to temper your expectations. Reportedly, Lucasfilm is currently in talks with new writers to take over the script, but Knight’s departure likely means disruptions to the production timeline. While filming was set to commence soon, it now seems probable that it will be delayed until at least early 2025.

Don’t lose hope, though; Star Wars: New Jedi Order isn’t the only cinematic project in the pipeline from Disney. The next film is tentatively titled The Mandalorian and Grogu, designed as a grand finale for the journeys of these characters, which have unfolded across various series (including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka). Directed by Jon Favreau, it’s scheduled for release in May 2026. Additionally, two other films are expected to hit theaters in December 2026 and December 2027, although their titles remain under wraps. It’s likely that Star Wars: New Jedi Order was among these but fans will need to wait for further updates from Disney to clarify the timeline.

Among the Star Wars series struggling to gain traction is The Acolyte. Since its inception, it has faced backlash from fans, impacting the well-being of some of its cast members. In fact, one actor publicly accused Disney of failing to provide adequate support during these challenging times.
