Nuremberg The number of unemployed in Germany fell to 2.465 million in September thanks to an autumn recovery. That is 114,000 fewer than in August and 382,000 fewer than in September 2020, announced the Federal Employment Agency on Thursday in Nuremberg. The unemployment rate fell by 0.2 points to 5.4 percent.
“The labor market continues to develop positively, unemployment and underemployment are falling sharply,” said BA board member Daniel Terzenbach.
This has not quite reached the level from the time before the corona crisis. In September 2019, the nationwide unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. In September 2020 it was 6.2 percent. Seasonally adjusted, the number of unemployed went down by 30,000 in September, the Federal Agency said. The September statistics included data that had been collected up to September 13th.
In September, a trend continued on the German labor market that could already be observed in the summer months of July and August: the end of the corona lockdown leads to some typical seasonal stimulation effects. The number of reported vacancies increased again in September – to 799,000, which is 209,000 more than a year ago.

The Federal Agency also reports relaxation in the area of short-time work. From September 1st to September 26th, reports for short-time working were received by 70,000 people. Data on how much short-time work was actually used is available to the Federal Agency by July. This month, short-time work benefits were paid for 927,000 people. At the peak of the corona pandemic, there were almost six million people in April 2020.
