Berlin The acute shortage of materials in German industry worsened again in September and is now greater than ever before. 77.4 percent of the companies reported bottlenecks and problems in the procurement of preliminary products and raw materials, as the Ifo Institute announced on Wednesday, citing its own survey.
The previous record of August of 69.2 percent was thus noticeably exceeded. “The bottleneck on the procurement side is getting tighter”, stated Ifo expert Klaus Wohlrabe. Price increases therefore remain on the agenda.
“There are a lot of orders, but companies cannot currently produce them,” added Wohlrabe.
The situation is particularly serious in the auto industry. Almost all companies (97 percent) reported problems here.

The proportion is also still very high in other central sectors: electrical equipment (93 percent), the chemical industry (67 percent) and mechanical engineering (89 percent). In the paper industry, significantly more companies reported a shortage on the procurement side (79 percent). According to the information, there was no relaxation in any single industry.
As a result, more and more companies want to raise their prices. Recently the automotive industry hadn’t seen much room for maneuver in terms of price increases. This has now changed, according to the Ifo Institute.
