NVIDIA and Taiwanese chip giant MediaTek are preparing to make a major ARM-based chip move against Qualcomm Snapdragon X and Apple M series. The reason is that 2025 will be a year when Windows on ARM devices will explode. NVIDIA has to strengthen its ranks. So will NVIDIA and MediaTek be able to handle this? Here are the details…
ARM-based chip coming from NVIDIA and MediaTek
In 2016, Microsoft had given Qualcomm exclusive rights to develop and manufacture ARM chips for Windows. But this deal is about to end and Microsoft is making a big push for next-generation ARM-based laptops. MediaTek will begin developing its own ARM-based CPUs that will be released in 2025, according to an exclusive report from Reuters. This move could end Qualcomm’s long-standing monopoly.
MediaTek has a long history of designing and developing system chip solutions for a wide range of electronic devices. However, instead of building its own CPU architecture from scratch, it plans for a faster development process by using off-the-shelf components from ARM. This means new chips can be brought to market faster.
ARM officials stated that one of their customers developed a chip in about nine months. It is thought that MediaTek can operate at a similar speed. This collaboration with NVIDIA will provide a great advantage, especially in AI-supported applications.
Apple has had great success with Mac computers with its own ARM-based M-series chips. This success also led Microsoft to use ARM designs. New generation ARM-based devices will be able to run AI applications more efficiently. This could threaten Intel’s dominance in the PC market.
Previous reports had stated that NVIDIA and AMD were also in the works to make ARM chips for Windows. However, this chip from MediaTek is independent of these studies It will be developed in collaboration with NVIDIA.
NVIDIA and MediaTek collaboration can create a big change in the PC market. New ARM-based chips will improve user experience by offering higher performance and energy efficiency. Additionally, with the spread of AI-supported applications, these chips will provide a great advantage.
