Dusseldorf A premiere will take place on September 7th in session room 9 at the district court in Frankfurt: Ulf Johannemann, the former global head of tax at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, will have to answer before a German criminal court for serious tax evasion. “There were 28 main hearing days until December 21, 2023,” said a spokesman for the court.
The lawyer is accused of advising Maple Bank on illegal cum-ex stock transactions and of having deceived the tax authorities. It was about the double reimbursement of a capital gains tax that had only been paid once. The prosecutors estimate the damage to the tax authorities at 388.5 million euros. In addition to Johannemann, two ex-Maple managers have to go to the dock.
The main character, however, is Johannemann. Because never before in the traditional history of Freshfields has an ex-partner had to answer before a German criminal court because of his consulting services.
