The tone between Germany and China is getting rougher

Dusseldorf The relationship between China and Germany is currently more tense than it has been for a long time. Beijing criticizes Germany’s realignment and sees the new China strategy as guided by ideology. Politicians in the traffic light coalition firmly reject the allegations. Beijing’s ambassador in Berlin, Wu Ken, goes one step further and speaks of a “Cold War mentality” in an interview with the Handelsblatt.

Long-time China correspondent Dana Heide puts the ambassador’s statements in the new episode of Handelsblatt Today: “Now you have to know that this is a common narrative of the Chinese government.”

In addition, the dispute over the future of Taiwan is creating additional uncertainty among German companies: “China used to be a safe anchor,” says Heide. In the eyes of some companies, that has now changed. Concerns about the consequences of an escalation in the Taiwan conflict are causing more and more companies to reconsider their economic dependence on China.
