Berlin The federal government wants to cancel or reduce excess corona vaccine deliveries to Germany in the foreseeable future. This concerns orders made as part of Europe-wide procurement at the beginning of the pandemic. They each include around 80 million doses for 2023 and 2024, according to sources in the Federal Ministry of Health.

In a report requested at the end of November, the ministry put the purchase obligation from European contracts at 119 million cans for 2023 alone. The paper is available to the Handelsblatt.

The costs for the batches are likely to be in the billions. However, these would no longer be needed, as the federal government would have secured enough advanced vaccines for new virus variants until at least autumn 2023, according to the ministry. Negotiations are underway to cancel or reduce the additional orders for 2023 and 2024 made through the EU Commission. Due to the low demand for corona vaccines and the generous orders, millions of doses are at risk of expiring.
