Ukrainian farmers are eagerly waiting for an agreement with Russia

Vienna Agriculture manager Alex Lissitsa says he initially mistook the announcement that Ukraine and Russia could agree to open the port of Odessa this week as a PR stunt. In the meantime, however, he was cautiously optimistic.

Lissitsa, head of the Warsaw-listed Ukrainian agribusiness IMC, is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to export corn and wheat in larger quantities than in recent months. Traditionally, exports went through ports on the Black Sea.

But these are partially destroyed, and sea mines also endanger shipping traffic. According to central bank data, from March to May 2022 Ukraine exported only about half as many agricultural goods as in the same period of the previous year.
