Garbage collected from Indonesia’s most polluted rivers finds new life in the hands of a team led by three brothers. So how does this extraordinary transformation happen?
Indonesia, the most polluted rivers in the world is hosted by a team racing against time to clean up the pollution.
Sungai Watch, a non-profit organisation, operates in Bali and East Java more than 2,000 tons in four years cleaned up the garbage. So how did they complete this process successfully?
Three siblings, Gary, Sam and Kelly, founded Sungai Watch in 2020 with the mission of collecting and recycling garbage.
The brothers, who spent their childhood in Bali, started this work with the aim of preserving the beauty of the island. “Bali was like heaven 20 years ago, now it’s an island covered in plastic.” they say.
The team collects plastic waste from rivers every day He works with a team of 30 people. The collected garbage is taken to 9 different sorting centers and separated into 30 different categories.
The most recyclable ones are sold to recycling facilities. However Since the recycling rate is only 33%, The team decided to reuse the remaining waste in creative ways.
One of the biggest plastic wastes, old sandals, are being transformed into new sandals in collaboration with a company called Indosol.
Recycled sandal material is used in the midsole, while recycled polyester straps are used in the upper. The brothers are also launching a new company called Sungai Design in 2024 making furniture from plastic bags They started.
Although they collected 2,000 tons of garbage, 40% are very deteriorated and sent to landfills. Data they collected shows that Indonesia produces 7 million metric tons of plastic waste annually, more than half of which is mismanaged.
Led by Gary, Sam and Kelly, Sungai Watch transforms garbage collected from rivers in Bali and East Java into reusable products environmental and economic provides transformation.
The process is evaluated with the right methods and shows that garbage is not just garbage. is of great value is showing.
