2nd Minimum Wage Increase Statement by President Erdogan

In his statement today, President Erdoğan touched upon the allegations of a mid-year increase in the minimum wage. Noting that the hike is not normally in the middle of the year, Erdogan said, “If inflation really oppresses, the determinations are made accordingly.” used the phrases.

The record-breaking exchange rate towards the end of 2021 in Turkey and the accompanying inflation, caused a mandatory increase in the minimum wage. But the minimum wage 50% raisehad lost its effectiveness in the first weeks of 2022. While it remains a matter of curiosity whether there will be a new increase in the minimum wage in the middle of this year, two very important statements came today.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in his statement today, made an evaluation regarding the allegations that there will be an interim increase in the minimum wage. Erdogan said:I do not find it right to tell my citizen something that will deceive him, that is, something we will not or cannot do. There is a commission to set the minimum wage. It meets every year. So it’s time for December. used the phrases.

President’s minimum wage statements:

“When the time comes, the unions that are responsible for the minimum wage and the Ministry of Labor sit down to talk and take my name. This is the situation. The point of whether it is an extraordinary situation is discussed there again. In other words, if the minimum wage really pushes my citizens against inflation, the determination will be made accordingly in those negotiations.

When there is an extraordinary development, we are not closed to them. They are in constant contact with trade unionists, especially with my minister, and they are in talks. Whether there is such a thing or not, we already see it. As you know, we have brought the minimum wage to a different point by making an unprecedented increase in the minimum wage. In another step, we have made increases regarding retirees.”

The Minister of Labor made a similar statement:

On the other hand, Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Bilgin, who made a statement today before President Erdoğan, “There was a net increase in the minimum wage. There is no such thing on our agenda.” used the phrases. In his statement last week, Bilgin said that he did not find the discussions of increasing the minimum wage twice a year meaningful.
