Launched in 2014, the John Wick franchise, led by Keanu Reeves, has redefined action cinema, grossing over $1 billion. Despite initial struggles, director Chad Stahelski found support from James Mangold, which helped refine the film’s vision. The series is set to expand with a spin-off titled Ballerina, featuring Ana De Armas, and Stahelski’s upcoming project, a Highlander reboot with Henry Cavill. While a fifth installment isn’t confirmed, Stahelski remains open to new narratives within the John Wick universe.
The Evolution of the John Wick Saga
Launched in 2014, the John Wick franchise has captivated audiences with four action-packed films, amassing an impressive $1 billion in global box office earnings. Spearheaded by the talented Keanu Reeves, this series has transformed the landscape of action cinema, thanks in large part to the visionary direction of former stunt coordinators, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski.
Challenges at the Start
Before becoming a celebrated action phenomenon, the John Wick series faced some initial hurdles. In a candid interview, director Chad Stahelski reflected on a particularly tough test screening of the first film, revealing that even friends and family were leaving the theater.
“Oh my God! You should have seen some of the early versions. During our first screening with our loved ones, the audience was walking out. It was challenging since they were our friends,” Stahelski shared.
Despite this rocky beginning, Stahelski remained undeterred. He received invaluable support from fellow filmmaker James Mangold, who had collaborated with him on the 2013 film, Wolverine: The Immortal’s Fight. Mangold’s encouragement helped shape the direction of John Wick.
“We aimed to create a myth, while others wanted us to focus on the movie aspect. We were determined to keep the plot simple, and James understood our vision. His guidance led us to significant structural changes and boosted our confidence to move forward,” emphasized Stahelski.
A New Chapter Ahead
Thanks to James Mangold’s belief in the project, the John Wick series flourished, and fans are now eagerly anticipating future installments. After completing four films, Chad Stahelski is set to embark on an exciting new venture: a reboot of Highlander featuring Henry Cavill.
Before diving into Highlander, Stahelski will work on Ballerina, a spin-off situated within the John Wick universe, starring Ana De Armas in the lead role. Keanu Reeves will also make a brief appearance, further connecting the two films. Ballerina is scheduled to hit theaters on June 4, 2025, while the release date for Highlander remains undisclosed.
Reflecting on his upcoming projects, Stahelski mentioned, “I was told, ‘Whatever you achieved with the gun fights in John Wick, we want you to replicate that with sword fights in Highlander. We aim to create something fresh and spectacular that audiences have never encountered before.'” His track record assures fans that a thrilling experience awaits!
As for the future of John Wick, the director has not completely ruled out a potential fifth installment. “With John Wick 4, I felt we reached our peak—at least for me. It’s a well-rounded story that I’m proud of, and I wouldn’t want to undermine it. If there’s to be another chapter, it would need to tell a completely different story,” concluded Chad Stahelski.
